Turn an image into a cutout you can review and refine. Toolinet’s free AI background remover separates a subject from its backdrop and gives you manual controls for missed edges. Keep the background transparent, add a solid color or use another image. Preview the result before exporting a new file.
What this background remover can do
The tool combines automatic background removal with an editable mask. AI creates the initial selection; erase and restore brushes help correct areas that need attention. You can adjust brush size, softness and strength, reduce edge halos, soften the final edge and compare the original with the result.
Add JPG, PNG or WebP images, with up to 10 images, 30 MB per image and the stated 16-megapixel limit. Large batches need more memory. The editor works locally on your device and downloads the AI model and runtime assets from this website.
How to remove an image background
- Choose your images. Add supported files or use Try a sample to explore the editor.
- Select AI quality. Detailed mode uses BiRefNet; Fast mode uses a smaller model for lighter processing.
- Run background removal. Keep the tab open while the model loads and the image is processed.
- Inspect the cutout. Switch between Original, Result and Compare to check missing areas and unwanted background.
- Refine the mask. Erase removes areas; Restore brings the original pixels back. Zoom in around difficult edges.
- Choose a background and export. Keep transparency or select a backdrop, prepare the downloads and save the resulting files.
Detailed or Fast mode?
Detailed mode is designed for stronger subject separation and has a larger first-use download. The interface notes approximately 112 MB of bundled assets for its initial load. Fast mode uses a smaller model and may suit devices with less available memory. Neither mode guarantees a perfect selection for every scene.
The first run can take longer because the browser must download and initialize the engine. Later runs may benefit from cached assets. Keep the page open and avoid starting several large jobs in different tabs on a memory-limited device.
Refine hair, edges and transparent objects
AI can mistake a background for the subject or remove parts of the subject. Fine hair, fur, glass, motion blur, similar foreground and background colors, and partially transparent materials are especially difficult. Inspect these areas rather than judging only by the center of the photo.
Use a smaller brush and lower strength near delicate edges. Erase remaining background in small strokes; Restore recovers original pixels when a hand, product edge or strand of hair was removed. Undo lets you step back if a correction goes too far.
Reduce halos without damaging the subject
A pale or colored fringe can remain around a cutout, particularly when the original backdrop contrasts with the new one. The edge-halo control reduces these fringes. A very strong adjustment can affect fine detail, so compare against both light and dark backgrounds.
Edge softness adds a small feather to the mask. A slight feather may help some photographs blend, while too much can make product outlines look fuzzy. Check at the intended display size after inspecting the edge up close.
Transparent, white, colored or photo background
Choose Transparent when the image will be placed over another design. White or black gives a simple solid backdrop. Custom color lets you match a layout, while Your background image places the cutout over a selected image. Blur original background keeps the original scene behind the separated subject with a blur effect.
These choices change presentation, not official photo eligibility. For passport and identity documents, follow the issuing authority’s editing rules. A background replacement can make an image unacceptable even when its dimensions are correct.
Which file format preserves transparency?
| Format | Transparency | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Supported | Cutouts and graphics for other designs |
| WebP | Supported | Web use when the destination accepts it |
| JPG | Not supported | Photos with a solid background |
The editor preview can be smaller than the original for smoother interaction. Downloads retain the original image dimensions. That does not mean AI edge accuracy is unlimited: inspect the exported image before using it at a large scale.
Verified sample output
During Toolinet site testing on 25 October 2026, the built-in product sample completed AI removal and exported as a 960 × 1100 PNG. The downloaded file contained transparent and opaque pixels. This verifies the sample workflow, not perfect removal on every photo.
After making a cutout, use the Image Cropper for framing, the Image Resizer for dimensions and the Image Compressor for a lighter final file.
Privacy and troubleshooting
The supplied editor does not send selected photo bytes to an image-processing server. Model and page requests still reach the host; read the privacy information. Downloads remove EXIF metadata, and your original files remain unchanged.
If AI cannot finish, try Fast mode, a smaller supported image or fewer files. A current browser with JavaScript, WebAssembly and enough memory is required. You can also start manual editing and build the selection with the brushes. Visit Help if downloads or browser features fail.
Frequently asked questions
Is the background remover free to use?
Yes. You can use AI removal and the manual editor without a processing charge. The first AI run downloads model assets and may take longer than later runs.
Are my photos sent to an AI processing server?
The supplied tool runs inference in your browser. It downloads model and runtime assets from this website, but it does not send selected photo bytes to an image-processing service.
Why is the first background-removal run slow?
The browser downloads and initializes the model. Detailed mode has a larger first-use download. Device speed, connection and available memory all affect the wait.
How can I fix missing hair or product edges?
Zoom in and use Restore to recover original pixels. Use Erase for remaining background. Smaller, softer or lower-strength brush strokes can help around delicate edges, but some sources remain difficult.
Why is the downloaded background white instead of transparent?
Check the selected background and output format. JPG cannot store transparency. Select Transparent and export PNG or WebP when you need a transparent background.
Can I use the result for a passport application?
Do not assume it will be accepted. Passport authorities have their own rules on backgrounds and digital alterations. Check the official instructions before editing an identity photo.
